New! - More Secure Process at the Pump
As a member of City CarShare, our cars are your cars. Everyday, we appreciate the great job
you do to share CCS cars with your fellow members. When you use the gas cards and
replace them for the next time the tank runs low, your fellow members thank you for the
courtesy. Meanwhile, CCS is able to pick up the tab seamlessly.
Unfortunately some non-members are trying to add their gas onto our tab too. Over the past
few months there have been several "smash and grab" incidents and gas cards have been taken.
While these thieves haven't gotten much gas, the inconvenience and added cost requires a
stronger, more secure process. So we came up with one. This new process will stop thieves
from getting any value from our cards and will help us keep our prices as low as possible by
preventing future break-ins and fraudulent use.
What is the new process?
As a member, you will have your own unique Gas Card Driver ID in addition to your
Member ID and your login password. Now, when filling up at the pump, you will be prompted
to enter your Gas Card Driver ID and the odometer number. Instead of using the 4-digit VIN
number, you will now need to enter your Gas Card Driver ID.
How do you get your Gas Card Driver ID?
Log in to the system (as if you were making a reservation)
Click on the "Account Info" tab
You will see your Gas Card Driver ID listed. Write this number down (hint: put it on your
CCS card) and bring it with you each time you use our cars. Your new Gas Card Driver ID will
also be included with each reservation confirmation you get.
Tip: Get a text message reservation confirmation sent to your cell phone each time you
reserve a car. We'll include your Gas Card Driver ID number with the confirmation so it
will be in your cell phone if you ever need it. Go to Preferences page in the Account
Info section once you log in. Enter your 10-digit cell phone number followed by @ and your
carrier's domain in the text message confirmation box (ex. 4159958588@txt.att.net). Most
carrier domains are listed to help you get started.
When will the process start?
The new gas cards will start appearing in cars on Monday, September 22. It will take a few
days for all the cards to be switched. Please refer to the sticker on the gas card to
determine if you should follow the old process or the new process during the time we are
switching out the cards.
We apologize for any inconvenience this new process may cause, and thank you for your
patience. We believe this change will provide you with a more reliable, convenient service...
not to mention helping to keep prices at the lowest rates available. If you have any
questions, we're always here to help.

Share your Opinion, Show our Impact
Researchers with the Innovative Mobility Research Group (IMR) at the University of
California, Berkeley and the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) are conducting a
nationwide study on how car sharing organizations across the country impact emissions, such
as gases associated with climate change. Please help us all by filling out their survey. All
CCS members who participate are entered in a drawing to win one of three $100 prizes. If you
win, your CCS account will be credited $100.
We're one of the largest and oldest car share providers in the country with members who are
great at sharing. So please take 10 minutes to show the country how the Bay Area embraces car
sharing. Your participation will provide proof that car sharing is beneficial for cities. Thanks!

Driving Tip - Don't Forget to Check for Damage!
You've fobbed in, adjusted your seat and rear view mirror and now you're ready to go,
right? Not so fast! Did you spot any damage before getting into the car? If not, step outside
and do a loop around the car to look for any new significant physical damage that is
easily noticeable from 5 feet away. If you see any, remove the damage sheet from the driver's
side visor to see if the damage is noted. If it is NOT already indicated on the damage sheet,
call us at 415-995-8588 to report it.
If calling after-hours, leave us a message with your name, the VIN of your vehicle and a
description of the damage. Do not write on the damage sheet. If you can't call
right away, make a note of the damage using the pad in the glove compartment and take the note
with you. Then call us when you're at a phone.
We thank you for also reporting a dirty car (beyond normal day-to-day wear and tear) or a car
with less than a half-tank of gas. Sharing unattended vehicles means everyone has a
responsibility to make City CarShare as convenient, reliable and efficient as possible.
Ultimately, taking these few extra steps can help you save some cash and time. If you forget
to notify City CarShare and the next member reports the damage, you could be held financially
responsible for the damage. To avoid being charged for damage you did not cause, always
remember to call us to report any new significant damage, dirty cars or empty tanks. Plus your
fellow members will thank you and you'll feel good about helping out and... well, you know, the
whole 'karma thing'.

Members Making a Difference! Trash Mash Up
Is your trash a hidden treasure? Bridget and Jessica, City CarShare members since 2003,
certainly might think so! For the past four years, these sisters, the founders of Trash
Mash-up, have been constructing "Maskostumes" out of disposable materials. These "Maskostumes"
are masks and costumes inspired by traditions from around the world. Trash Mash-up enriches our
community by developing creative connections among those that make the costumes in addition to
raising awareness about cultural traditions and environmental issues.
Thanks to TMU there is a new way to reduce your waste and see your trash in whole new light.
TMU gladly accepts in-kind donations of non recyclable materials, such as soymilk containers
that are silver on the inside (aseptic tetra pack), bottle caps, and plastic bags. Your clean
materials can be mailed to: 1838 32nd Avenue San Francisco, CA 94122.
As a local nonprofit, we have a soft spot for other local programs. If you have a program that
makes a difference and would like to be featured in our monthly newsletter, let us know at
marketing@citycarshare.org.

Events Around the Bay
"How does it work?" That's a common question we get at events, like Art & Soul in Oakland.
Even when the weather and music are great, the best part about attending community events is
meeting friendly people who stop by to learn about us. Personal testimonials from our awesome
member volunteers are a surefire way to persuade others that car sharing can work for them too.
Since pictures speak volumes, check out our new photo page to see fun pictures from recent
events. Here's a glance at the events we will be Sharing the Love at this month:
SF Parking Day - September 19th
SF General Transportation Fair - September 19th
UCSF Orientation for New Graduate Students on September 19th
Cole Valley Fair - September 21st
UCSF New Student Orientation Fair - September 24th
How Berkeley Can You Be? - September 28th
If you would like to share the word about City CarShare, contact marketing@citycarshare.org
to sign up for specific events, or email us at volunteers@citycarshare.org to get ongoing
volunteer announcements.

Celebrate San Francisco's Architecture
This year's Architecture and the City theme Design for Community will showcase the way in
which buildings impact our streets and neighborhoods, and more importantly, how they help to
shape our communities into more livable places. Among the highlights for the rest of the 2008
program is the Architectural Gems bike tour on September 20, and the Dining by Design events on
September 18th and 26th.
CCS celebrates our homegrown San Francisco style everyday. That's why
we're sponsoring this local event for the third year in a row. Please visit the Architecture
and the City website to purchase tickets and to check out the events calendar.
Thanks for sharing!
