City CarShare Newsletter

Bringing Kids Back to Nature

As a local nonprofit, City CarShare supports many local organizations and businesses that add richness, opportunity and diversity to our communities. One of these special organizations is Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) – our new partner in supporting Bay Area youth.

One of the best things we can do for kids is to take them to wildlife areas so they can play, learn and explore. Studies show that kids who have access to wildlife adventures are less likely to experience obesity, depression, attention deficit disorder, anxiety and low self-esteem. However, youth educators and teachers often have to overcome bureaucratic, budgetary and legal hurdles in order to transport a group of kids to parks and nature areas.

BAWT and City CarShare have found a way to break down these barriers. With you, our members, we are helping to get kids out into the wilderness. In May, we launched a new, groundbreaking program by introducing two Toyota minivans that are shared by City CarShare and BAWT. We call them BAWTMobiles.

These vans, which were purchased by BAWT, are available to all City CarShare members for reservations up to two weeks in advance of a trip. BAWT youth educators (available only through BAWT certification) may reserve up to three months prior to a youth trip. This special arrangement will ensure efficient use of the vehicles while supporting both BAWT and City CarShare's missions.

For CCS members, these vans are great for soccer day Saturdays, picking up families from the airport, or grabbing a group of friends and heading down to the Shoreline for a concert. Or why not take a trip to the wilderness, as well? Like our wheelchair accessible van in Berkeley, the standard driving rate is $7/hour + 40¢/mile (Night Owl rates: $3/hour + mileage) for all members, including SharePlus members. (Extended Freedom Trip rates are $50/24hr + 10¢/mile for the first 200 miles.)

We are thrilled to partner with BAWT. Our partnership makes it easier for urban youth to experience wilderness firsthand. As a City CarShare member, you are supporting new ways to extend car sharing, helping kids in ways that contribute to their overall health. For more information about the BAWT program, click here.

Celebrate Pride in Style Contest!

San Francisco's Pride celebration is coming up on June 28th and June 29th. As we mentioned in May's newsletter, we have some fantastic Grandstand seats (A $31 value for each!) and VIP party tickets to give to contest winners, thanks to our partnership with the SF LGBT Pride Committee. The parade and party both take place on June 29.

There are two ways to enter the contest:
  • Video Submissions: Submit a video by Friday, June 13th that tells us why you are celebrating SF Pride and why Sharing the Love as a City CarShare member is important to you. Be creative. You don't have to be a world-class filmmaker to win, just be original and be yourself! Once you've created your entry, upload the video to your favorite video sharing site (YouTube, Vimeo, imeem, etc) and send marketing@citycarshare.org a link to your entry along with your name.

Video submission winners get to choose what tickets they want (Grandstand seats or VIP party.) They also get to take a group of friends (four people) to their chosen event, or get two tickets for each prize category.

  • Text Submissions: Even if you're not up for creating a snazzy video, we still want to hear why you're proud to be a City CarShare member. Whether it is a memorable quote, testimonial, or just a funny or emotional story about how City CarShare has improved/changed/transformed your life, we're all ears. To enter, send your name and text submission to marketing@citycarshare.org by June 13th.

Text submission winners get two tickets to one of the events. Let us know if you prefer the parade seating or VIP party and we'll try to accommodate your preference.
As a local nonprofit, City CarShare loves the Bay Area. In fact, all of our resources and every dollar earned goes right back into the community through our services, advocacy and support. Again this year, we commemorate SF Pride—the theme this year is United by Pride, Bound for Equality—and we hope to see many of you during the weekend's festivities.

More SF Pride Fun—Join us!

Last year was fantastic but this year, we're aiming to exceed our fun quota. Want to help? We're marching in the parade and Sharing the Love at our Civic Center booth with costumes, the infamous spin-a-wheel and — well, you'll just have to come by to see this year's new surprise. (Hint: Bring your own sponge.)

Join us in celebration of pride and sharing! March, dance, frolic and share the word with us in the parade or at our booth. The parade is Sunday, June 29 and we'll be at the booth on both Saturday and Sunday (June 28 and 29). To participate, email us at marketing@citycarshare.org by June 20th.

BLUEGRASS Perk for You!

Greenbelt Alliance's third annual "Bluegrass for the Greenbelt", concert is coming up on Sunday, June 22 at the Dunsmuir Historic Estate in Oakland. This fun, family-friendly concert features Hot Buttered Rum, Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands, and The Wronglers. The concert begins at 2:00 pm and tickets are $25 for Greenbelt Members, $40 for Non-members, and $60 for the New Member Special (includes concert ticket and one-year membership to the Greenbelt Alliance). Children under 12 get in for free!

This year, the concert is greener than ever with a solar-powered stage, a biodiesel shuttle, and complimentary bicycle valet parking. However, if you choose to drive, Greenbelt Alliance, our partner organization, is waiving the $5 parking fee for anyone arriving in a City CarShare vehicle. For more information and tickets, please visit www.BluegrassForTheGreenbelt.org.

New Cars on the Block

As a socially-responsible car share provider, we match the number of cars and locations in our fleet with the amount of demand. This ensures that cars are available to you without flooding your neighborhood with excess vehicles. After all, our expansion strategy supports our mission to create space in our cities by replacing numerous privately owned vehicles with fewer shared vehicles. Here are the latest fleet additions.

Driving Tip: Hang up and Drive, It's the Law

It was only a matter of time until California caught on. Beginning July 1, 2008, California drivers are required to use a hands-free device when talking on their cell phone. Fines for breaking the new law will be $20 for the first offense and $50 each time after.

Studies have shown that cell phone users add to traffic problems. Since drivers using cell phones aren’t devoting their full attention to the road, their reaction times are greatly impaired. Holding a phone to your ear exacerbates the situation, causing drivers to create bottlenecks and stop-and-start situations. By taking away this cell phone distraction, studies indicate that about 300 lives could be saved per year.

So please put down your cell phone and try turning on some tunes instead. If the thought of putting down your cell phone is like losing your right arm, remember to bring your hands-free headset, or you'll be paying some hefty fines. As always, thanks for driving safely!

Kudos to Us!

Did you hear? Looks like the elections aren't the only polls people care about these days. SF Weekly just named us The Best Reason to Ditch Your Car. That's the sixth time we've won one of their Best of San Francisco Awards. Thanks to everyone who voted!!

And that's not all. City CarShare is also a finalist for the San Francisco Business Times Green Business Awards. We're proud to be recognized along with other notable finalists, all friends of City CarShare, like the New Resource Bank, City of Berkeley, Kaiser Permanente and others.

All of this sharing is truly catching on! Last month we approved our 18,000th member.

We are certain that some of this growth can be attributed to our loyal member referrals who share the word about our services. Please continue to spread the word on car sharing and City CarShare. And don't forget: If you get a friend to sign up, you'll both get to share $40 in driving credits.

Thanks for sharing!
